While in math class, have you ever wondered when you're going to use math in real life? 

 

You might think that mathematical knowledge is impractical, 

 

but it is essential for many careers, even for ones that seem unrelated to math. 

 

Let's hear from some people with these kinds of careers. 

 

A Fashion Designer 

 

I'm a fashion designer. 

 

When it comes to fashion, people usually think of models walking glamorously down a runway wearing gorgeous clothes. 

 

But well ahead of fashion shows, designers need to transform their ideas and two-dimensional sketches into real-life garments―and that requires math. 

 

Designing clothes frequently involves deliberate calculation and attention to proportion. 

 

I always need to ask myself questions like 

 

"Where should I add or subtract fabric to make the clothing fit nicely?" 

 

and "How can I make the item in different sizes?" 

 

If I weren't capable of answering these questions using my mathematical knowledge, 

 

my clothes would never turn out the way I wanted them to look, 

 

and I would never be able to show off my designs on a runway.

 

 

 

A Special Effects Director 

 

I'm a special effects director. 

 

My job is to bring unreal objects and images, such as alien spaceships in science fiction movies, to life on the screen. 

 

To do this job, you must have an artistic eye, 

 

but there's also no way you can do it without math skills. 

 

High-level math is definitely required if you want to use standard special effects software skillfully. 

 

For example, you should be adept in analytic geometry 

 

because it explains how you can make an object move to a designated point or rotate at a certain angle. 

 

With solid mathematical knowledge, you will be able to make special effects that are truly lifelike. 

 

So if you want a career creating astonishing and dynamic special effects, 

 

you should pay close attention in math class.

 

 

 

A Baseball Team Manager 

 

I'm the general manager of a baseball team. 

 

One of my main duties is to choose which players are on the team. 

 

Many fans rarely think about math when watching baseball games. 

 

However, it's very hard to put together a winning team without advanced mathematical knowledge, especially in the area of statistical analysis. 

 

Our team gathers data on every game. 

 

Of course, batting averages and the number of home runs are important data. 

 

But we also keep a record of the kinds of pitches that are thrown, where hit balls land on the field, and much more. 

 

We end up with enormous amounts of data. 

 

After we use statistical analysis to interpret all these numbers, 

 

we are able to assess a player's performance and value. 

 

This analysis helps the team decide which players should be kept, traded, or brought in from other teams. 

 

Whether you realize it or not, mathematics is a fundamental tool for many careers. 

 

So, next time you find yourself wondering, "When am I ever going to use math formulas in real life?" 

 

remember that the answer might be in your future career!
