Lesson 1 My Future Self

The Power of Your Mindset:

Believe in Growth

You may often hear that human abilities can be cultivated with effort.

In fact, psychological experiments have yielded results showing that this is true.

Before you move on, complete the questionnaire below.

Categories

Check the box in each category that best describes you.

 Intelligence

□My intelligence can be developed by training.

□ My intelligence is innate and will never change.

Challenges

□I enjoy trying new or difficult things.

□ I would rather avoid new or difficult tasks.

Achievement

□ My achievement depends on my effort.

□ My achievement depends on my intelligence.

Feedback

□ I use feedback constructively.

□ I ignore useful but negative feedback.

Failure

□ I see failure as an opportunity to learn.

□ Failure means I've reached the limit of my abilities.

How many boxes did you check?

This questionnaire can reveal your mindset.

If you checked more of the sentences on the left, you're likely to have a "growth mindset."

On the other hand, if you checked more on the right, you may have a "fixed mindset."

According to psychologists, people with a fixed mindset consider their intelligence an inherent quality and assume that it determines their achievement.

Also, they tend to avoid taking on any task with a risk of failure.

That's because they believe the results mirror their intelligence.

However, people with a growth mindset believe their intelligence can grow with effort.

So they view challenges as springboards for growth.

Even when they face tough tasks, they work hard because they believe they can accomplish more based on their effort.

You can change your own mindset since it is not an ingrained trait.

More importantly, if you have more of a fixed mindset, shifting to a growth one can help you become more intelligent.

This is actually confirmed by neuroscience.

The human brain is composed of billions of neurons.

As people learn new things, the connections between the neurons that transmit information about a task are renewed and strengthened.

And as this repeats, the brain areas involved in the task are stimulated to work better.

In short, having a growth mindset leads to a more productive brain and helps you reach higher levels of achievement.

Every time you fail at certain tasks and feel discouraged, remember that your brain forms new connections as you take on each challenge.

 Keep learning and making progress.
