Lesson 2 Living Life to the Fullest

Seize the Day!

Imagine that you have a bank account.

And let’s say that this is the only bank account that you have.

Every morning, exactly 86,400 won goes into it, and every night, all of the money disappears.

You cannot save the money for the next day.

If this is the case, you would want to try very hard to spend your money wisely and get the most out of it during the day.

Time works just the same way. Every morning, exactly 86,400 seconds are given to you.

It may not seem valuable because you will get the exact same amount the next day.

However, you only have a limited amount of time in a day, and you cannot save any part of it.

Therefore, you should seize the day! In order to do so, you need to learn ways to manage this limited and precious time.

Although failing to manage time is a huge waste, spending it wisely is often difficult.

Sometimes, you struggle with too much work to do.

At other times, you find yourself passing the time without any pressure because there is no urgent task to fulfill.

So what is the best way to lead our daily lives with these 86,400 seconds?

Here are some tips that will help you manage your time more effectively.

1. Plan Ahead

Figure out the amount of time you need for your activities and make a weekly plan.

This way, you’ll be able to take greater control of your time and perform your responsibilities in a timely fashion.

Without planning, you may find yourself easily caught up with more than one task and end up finishing none of them.

You see some people keeping a calendar or making a daily to-do list.

These are also good ways to organize your schedule in advance.

Don’t forget that for every minute you spend organizing, an hour is earned.

2. Put Your Responsibilities in the Order of Importance

Divide your activities into four categories:

(1) important and urgent,

(2) important but not urgent,

(3) unimportant but urgent, and

(4) unimportant and not urgent.

Those that fall under the first category are your top responsibilities.

Make sure that all of these are met before you move on to those that are less important or urgent.

For example, let’s say there will be an exam next week.

You might want to study (important and urgent) first before you hang out with your friends (important but not urgent).

It is easy to do the things you want to do first.

However, categorizing will prevent you from losing focus and will help you accomplish the things that actually matter.

3. Make Every Second Count

Use your spare time wisely.

Sometimes you may find yourself having only ten minutes before the next activity.

You may think that nothing much can be done during this short time.

However, you can actually do many things in just ten minutes, like writing a paragraph for an assignment or solving about five math problems.

You can even do some reading on the subway.

4. Find Your Most Productive Time

You’ll be able to concentrate better and work more efficiently when you are at your best.

When do you feel you can do your best work?

If you think you can handle writing papers better in the morning, don’t wait until late at night to do it.

If you think you are a night person, then schedule your study time for late hours because that’s when you can be most productive.

Jinu’s Diary

What a productive day!

April 10

I used my time in a very productive way today!

It was all thanks to an article I read the other day.

It had a lot of useful tips on effective time management.

After reading it, I decided to put my responsibilities in the order of importance and plan ahead.

I was really stressed out because I had assignments in both History and English.

So, I first wrote down the activities I had to do and then put them into four different categories based on their urgency and importance.

I figured out that doing research for my history paper was my top responsibility.

My English assignment was the second most important thing.

After that, I made a schedule for the day by assigning more time to my top responsibilities.

It was a great success! First, I was able to finish my research for the history assignment.

All I have to do now is arrange the information in an organized fashion and make it readable.

Also, I finished some reading for my English class. After finishing these important activities, I spent some quality time with my family.

I learned that good planning works wonders.

We all have a limited amount of time in a day. We cannot repeat a single second from yesterday.

Also, we cannot use tomorrow’s time in advance. At the end of the day, the things we did or didn’t do cannot be changed.

Therefore, we need to do our best with the time we have each day.

Time does not wait for us. If there is no today, there is no tomorrow.

We need to be thankful for today. That is why we call the present the “present.”
