What is the "sharing economy"? 

 

Have you ever bought something, used it once, and left it unused for a long time? 

 

If you have, you may like the idea of the sharing economy. 

 

It refers to an economic model that has recently become popular. 

 

In this model, you are able to borrow or rent assets such as cars, houses, and even music that are owned by someone else. 

 

You do not waste your money, and the assets are utilized as fully as possible.

 

 

 

How is it affecting industries? 

 

Cars 

On average, a car is used for less than one hour a day. 

 

In 2010–2012, personal car sales grew by 9% globally. 

 

Car sharing membership grew by 20%.

 

Houses 

80% of travelers would be glad to rent someone else’s holiday house. 

 

In the U.K., the typical house-sharing host earns ￡2,822 renting out a room for 33 nights a year.

 

Music 

In 2013, digital revenues accounted for 50% of the U.K. record industry trade revenues for the first time. 

 

Revenues from streaming grew by 41%. 40 million people use a music streaming service.
