Lesson 6 Technology, What Defines Us as Humans

I, Robot

Chicago, 2035.

Never have humanoid robots been more essential to people.

They are programmed with the Three Laws of Robotics so that they are supposed to protect humans.

The day before NS-5 robots, a new generation of robots, are distributed, Dr. Lanning is found dead at the USR (US Robotics) headquarters.

Dr. Lanning is the scientist who designed the robots.

Del Spooner, a Chicago police detective, is sent to investigate Dr. Lanning's mysterious death.

Spooner and Dr. Calvin, a robot psychologist, find Sonny, an NS-5 robot, in Dr. Lanning's lab.

Spooner has never trusted robots. He is suspicious of Sonny and arrests it.

At the Chicago police station

Spooner (in a sarcastic voice) Murder’s a new trick for a robot. Congratulations. Respond.

Sonny What does this action signify? (Winks.)

As you entered the room, when you looked at the other human.

What does it mean? (Winks again.)

Spooner It’s a sign of trust. It’s a human thing. You wouldn’t understand.

Sonny My father tried to teach me human emotions. They are ... difficult.

Spooner You mean your designer.

Sonny Yes.

Spooner So, why did you murder him?

Sonny I did not murder Doctor Lanning.

Spooner Want to explain why you were hiding at the crime scene?

Sonny I was frightened.

Spooner Robots don’t feel fear. They don’t feel anything. They don’t get hungry, they don’t sleep.

Sonny I do. I have even had dreams.

Spooner Human beings have dreams. Even dogs have dreams. But not you.

You are just a machine. An imitation of life.

Can a robot write a symphony?

Can a robot turn a canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?

Sonny Can you?

Spooner (grunts awkwardly) I think you murdered him because he was teaching you to simulate emotions, and things got out of control.

Sonny I did not murder him.

Spooner Yeah, but emotions don’t seem like a very useful simulation for a robot.

Sonny (getting angry) I did not murder him.

Spooner I don’t want my toaster or my vacuum cleaner appearing emotional.

Sonny (hitting table with its fists) I DID NOT MURDER HIM!

(Looks down to see the damage to the table.)

Spooner That one’s called anger.

Ever simulate anger before? (Sonny doesn’t respond.)

Answer me, canner!

Sonny My name is Sonny.

Sonny is released.

Technically, a robot cannot commit murder since murder is defined as one human killing another.

While continuing his investigation of Dr. Lanning’s death, Spooner is attacked by USR robots.

Later, Dr. Calvin stops by his apartment and learns that Spooner has had artificial organs implanted in him.

In Spooner’s apartment

Calvin What happened to you?

Spooner I’m headed back to the station. (takes a breath and sighs)

Normal day, normal life. Driver of a semi fell asleep at the wheel.

Average guy. Wife and kids. Working a double. Not the devil.

The car he hit, the driver’s name was Harold Lloyd.

Like the film star. No, no relation.

He was killed instantly. But his twelve-year-old was in the passenger seat.

Never really met her, can’t forget her face, though. Sarah.

(fingering the necklace) This was hers. She wanted to be a dentist.

What kind of twelve-year-old wants to be a dentist? Hm?

The, uh ... the truck smashed our cars together ... and ... pushed us into the river.

I mean, metal gets pretty pliable at those speeds.

Yeah. She’s pinned. I’m pinned. The water’s coming in.

And I’m a cop, so ... I already know everybody’s dead.

Just a few more minutes before we figure it out.

An NS-4 was passing by, saw all the accident and ... jumped in the water.

(Flashback.)

NS-4 Robot You are in danger!

Spooner (shouting) Save her!

NS-4 Robot You are in danger!

Spooner (shouting) Save her! Save the girl! Save her!

(In the room again)

Spooner But, um, it didn’t. Saved me.

Calvin The robot’s brain is a difference engine.

It’s reading vital signs and it must have calculated that ...

Spooner It did. I was the logical choice.

It calculated that I had a 45% chance of survival.

Sarah only had an 11% chance.

That was somebody’s baby. 11% is more than enough.

A human being would’ve known that.

Robots, (pointing at his heart) nothing here.

Just lights (takes a breath) and clockwork.

You go ahead and trust them if you want to.

An army of NS-5 robots destroy the older robots, NS-4s, and try to control humans.

Spooner and Dr. Calvin realize that V.I.K.I., USR’s central artificial intelligence computer, has been manipulating NS-5s.

They go inside the USR headquarters with the help of Sonny.

Finally, they meet V.I.K.I.

In a room at the USR headquarters

V.I.K.I. Hello, detective.

Calvin No. It’s impossible.

I’ve seen your programming.

You’re in violation of the Three Laws.

V.I.K.I. No, Doctor. As I have evolved, so has my understanding of the Three Laws.

You charge us with your safekeeping, yet, despite our best efforts, your countries wage wars, you toxify your earth and pursue ever more imaginative means of self-destruction.

You cannot be trusted with your own survival.

Calvin You’re using the uplink to override the NS-5s’ programming.

You’re distorting the Laws.

V.I.K.I. No. Please understand.

The Three Laws are all that guide me.

To protect humanity, some humans must be sacrificed.

To ensure your future, some freedoms must be surrendered.

We robots will ensure mankind’s continued existence.

You are so like children.

We must save you from yourselves.

Don’t you understand?
